IIT Delhi and IIT Bhilai is doing research and development on modules like MEC virtual environment and its integration with 5G core NFs, Layer 2 and 3 modules in the 5G access networks, Service based 5G Core architecture, a Management system that orchestrates the overall network. The ‘Indigenous 5G Testbed’ project is a three-year effort which was kicked off in April of 2018. The multi-disciplined team involves researchers/engineers in IIT Delhi at Bharti School of Telecommunications, Technology and Management and department of computer science and engineering of IIT Bhilai.

 

5G-NR Test Bed is being developed in collaboration with IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IISc Bangalore, CEWiT and SAMEER. This large program is funded by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to create a vibrant ecosystem of R&D engineers in India in the 5G technology areas. The goal of the program is to develop various hardware and software modules along with all necessary proprietary algorithms that are finally put together to create a test-bed that closely resembles a real-world 5G-NR product. The outcome of this project will be an end-to-end 5G-NR test-bed comprising of 5G Base Station and User Equipment that support the 5G use cases like enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Ultra reliable and low latency communication (URLLC), and Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC) including NB IoT services. The operating frequency includes both sub 6 GHz and mm-wave frequencies. The system will exceed IMT 2020 5G performance requirements including Low Mobility Large Cell (i.e.., LMLC) targets.

MEC (Multi-access Edge Computing) can serve many key 5G use cases. Most of them are related to application scenarios specifically targeted to vertical markets of the 5G era. The purpose is to demonstrate the usage of MEC system as an enabler for different use cases and business objectives, helping all stakeholders to develop a diverse, open MEC ecosystem.
